The Stash!

Coraline was nice enough to allow me to some time to take pictures of our nearly completed diaper stash.  Getting everything washed and dry at once is no easy feat. Suffice it to say, this is minus 2 Kissaluvs fitteds, 1 Thirsties Duo Wrap and several diapers on their way to us via the United States Postal Service.

If you are thinking about cloth diapering…switching or new baby on the way, I want you to know realistically what you are in for. It is not overwhelming or daunting once you are in it, this much I promise. Washing diapers is my all time favorite chore, second only to buying new diapers.  A lot of calculators online will give you a bare minimum cost with prefold diapers and covers, I don't think it's super realistic though. Coraline screams when she feels wet, so a prefold or a cheaper fitted even, will not cut the mustard for her. We need the next step up and I think, most babies will.  (You can see in one picture that i use our prefolds on our changing table, if a mess gets on one, i just throw it in the diaper pail and i don't have to constantly change the changing cover)

What we look for in a diaper is simple and it might be what you want or you might find that you have some other needs.  All babies are different and a certain diaper that i might rave about, might not be great on your baby. Coraline is very tall and skinny, so whenever possible I look for diapers with adjustments at the waist as well as the legs.

My main criteria are as follows

Good fit

Will grow with my daughter

Cost

Ease of use

Everyone is going to have a different criteria that they look for when buying a diaper. There are literally hundreds of brands of diapers out there and some are going to work for you better then others.  All of my diapers fit our criteria well.

I have more in my stash then one would actually "need" to cloth diaper. I would say  12-14 diapers would be just fine.  Keeping in mind that a newborn is going to need more diaper changes in a day then say a 5 month old. That's why people normally recommend prefold and covers for the newborn stage.  If at all possible for you I highly recommend doing a trial program with cloth diapers. The DiaperLab in my area offers this and so do some online retailers like Jillian's Drawers. It would be worth it to use some different brands and types for a few weeks before having to commit.  Also, I would say don't be afraid to buy gently used diapers from a store or person you trust. The discount can be good and the diapers have generally only been used a few times making them nearly new anyway. Lets face it, they are poop holders, lets not get all uppity about it.

On to our stash...

the entire stash, more or less

Here it is, laid out in piles on the kitchen table.
The piles above are as follows
4 Fuzzi Bunz size Medium, snap closures, pockets

1 Motherease Air Flow cover, side snap closure

2 Kissaluvs fitteds , size 1, snap closure
1 Thirsties Duo Cover, size 2, snap rise adjustment, hook&loop closure
I have more diapers on the way, like I said, I have more then is necissary. Remember that especially if you plan on having more then one child, like we do, cloth diapers are a long term investment. They are going to last for a few children.
Check out Le Petit Owlet's partial diaper stash.... I have stash envy :)
* a special note about the Flip diapering system. This is a new diaper from the makers of bumGenius. It consists of a cover and an organic prefold insert. The Flip cover can also be used over a fitted diaper, which is what we will probably do a lot.
