Birthday Bash
Monday, June 14, 2010 at 9:58PM OK, I admit it, I am obsessing. I haven’t done any real blog work all weekend and normally that is my catching up time. I did clean my house but that is beside the point. The point is that any day now I will be posting my Dear Coraline letter to my 9 month old daughter. 9 months! Along with everything that 9 months has brought or has yet to bring comes 12 months. 12 months equals 1 year and 1 year = Birthday Party.
Now I know where you stand on this because there are only two sides to the 1st Birthday Party debate, for or against. Either you are sitting there thinking “hooray, the girl is going to plan a cute birthday party” or “oh lord, no one cares and the kid isn’t even going to remember”. So you decide if you are into it or not. I believe a big part of why I am into it is because I was born on Christmas. Being born on Christmas is the single worst day you could possibly have. Never did I get a party on my day with friends, fun birthday decorations and no thought of Santa Claus looming in. Basically having a Christmas birthday makes you a hobbit. Hobbits, on their birthdays, give everyone else presents instead of getting. I don’t want my parents to ever read this and feel badly or think I am lying so let me add that my parents celebrate my birthday as best they can. Every Christmas Eve I would open birthday gifts and have cake or whatever dinner I wanted, always separate from the Christmas stuff. So they did good, and for the sake of staying on topic I am not even going to mention the combined “this is for Christmas and your Birthday”. Eff that.
So yes, I am going to live vicariously through my daughter for the time being and cherish her birthday, celebrating every last moment I can get. I was in labor for 53 hours, if that does not give me the freedom to throw a party, I’m just not sure what does.
I’m narrowing down what I want her day to be like. I want a theme which I think I have narrowed down to a kind of Vintage Circus. Normally I am not all about pink on Coraline but I like the pink, yellow and green combination. I could seriously just keep teetering back and forth on all of these decisions but I have to go ahead and make some already. I want to make as many things for the party as possible and I need the time to do that. A lot of it started with this cute invitation from Tiny Prints.

We have always had a lot of elephants around in the form of toys and pictures so that seemed fitting. From that came the circus type theme in my head and I’m combining that with this amazingly cute party I found over at pigtails & pjs blog.
So here are some things I have found are currently inspiring this backyard bash for my bean.
Felted Elephant Cake Topper from Myko Bocek Studios on Etsy
Vintage Fabric Banner from Sunshine Garden on Etsy
Party Pom Poms from Party Poms on Etsy
Felt Birthday Hat by Stella and Livi on Etsy
Yes, you are going to hear more about the birthday party! Have you thrown a party for a 1st Birthday? Are you going to? I would love to know.

I am TOTALLY throwing mt daughter a 1st b day bash!! She is only 9.5 months but I have already started planning....the theme is " You are my sunshine" and the colors will be Orange and Yellow :)
I am excited to read this series!
Ok, first off--check out my blog friend Suzanne's circus themed first birthday for her son Evan: http://bebehblog.com/?p=2757 (and check out the blog posts before and after, b/c there are more bday blogs with more pictures!!)
And Little Man will only be 8 months next week and I have already started the gears thinking about his bday party. It is going to be smaller, not a ton of people...but we (by "we" I mean "I"--oh, and my MIL too, who is amazing and loooooooves this kind of stuff) are going to do a sock monkey theme. Carson now has 2 sock monkeys that he loves very much and there is a ton of fun stuff on Etsy that I will probably start thinking about ordering soon.
Also, I am going to make a photo book, with one page with pictures for each month of his first year. Then I am going to leave blank pages in the back for people to write messages about things they remembered or loved about his first year!!
I totally threw my daughter a 1st Birthday party! It wasn't really elaborate, cause I had to work that whole week and really, she isn't going to remember. She had her grandparents, 2 aunts, an uncle and her cousin over. I made 2 kinds of cake, one carrot for the babies and the other, german chocolate made into cake balls. I decorated those with pink icing. It was fun! Then they all took naps. Hehe
I did throw my son a birthday party. It was really fun and rewarding. I didnt do the whole decorations because I just couldnt find anything I liked and didnt have time to make it. I made yummy foods (sushi, pitas and hummus) and since my food was too 'exotic' my mother in law brought party trays of veggies/meat/cheese. I made a cake http://twitpic.com/k73ak
The cake was my favorite part.
Oh and how dd my son react? He just loved having all his friends and family there. Running back and forth between grandparents and aunts and uncles.
