Away We Go in Cloth Diapers
Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 9:40AM This weekend was action packed and fun filled. For the first time ever, we took a family trip that we planned ourselves instead of having everything booked and planned for us by my parents. It made me feel much more adult, I had a great time driving our rented Mercedes as well. The weekend involved renting the car and driving to Long Island, NY to visit with my extended family. My grandmother, aunt and cousins all reside in NY, originally hailing from the Bronx, they migrated to Long Island over 30 years ago. New York is one of the places I have always felt at home, I was born there. We moved around the country for much of my childhood but New York was always a constant for me, I would spend the summers there with my Aunt acting as a live in babysitter when her boys were younger. Those are literally some of my best memories.
Anyway, this seemed like a fantastic time to try cloth diapering away from home. I had no idea what to expect in terms of the amount of diapers we would need, how many leaks or accidents might occur, that sort of thing. What I ended up doing was just packing pretty much all of our diapers. I washed everything the night before we left. Instead of packing them in the suitcase or diaper bag, I bought a small, cheap duffle bag from Target that was just for the clean diapers. For our 3 days away from home I had roughly 30 diapers in the bag. I also packed a brand new package of disposable wipes, a travel wet bag and our larger Planet Wise wet/dry bag.
Every morning I would put 3 or 4 clean diapers in the diaper bag just like I would if we were going out for the day around Boston. I would also put the travel wet bag into the diaper bag for the dirty diapers. I always kept the duffle bag full of clean diapers in the trunk of the car, just in case. When we got back to the hotel each night, I would empty the dirty diapers into our large wet bag.
I know you are wondering how it went, cause I was super curious myself. I was prepared for the worst but in all honesty this post is super hard to write because it was such a breeze! Nothing happened, no diapers leaked, we didn't have any blow outs, I was never without a clean diaper or stuck with a dirty. Coraline was changed on schedule just like always and everything went better then I could have expected. When we came home on Sunday I put all the diapers into the wash.
I can't believe how easy cloth diapering was away from home. Mind you, we were only gone for 3 days but this small trip has given me the confidence to use our cloth on longer trips as well. If we were going away for a week I would simply try to find a laundromat or washing machine before we left, this way I could wash my diapers like normal. It would totally be worth the short amount of time to wash them. I literally feel like I could go my entire life without having to buy another disposable diaper! That my friends, is an incredible feeling.
I urge everyone to give it a try!

we're going away for 3 days/2 nights in a couple of weeks and i'm still debating whether or not to do cloth or disposables... the hubby would say to do disposables... but i'm hoping to bring along my cloth. thanks for sharing your experience!
