BlogMania Sponsor Spotlight: TerraCycle

A few weeks ago when I was contacted by TerraCycle, I really had no idea who they were. When I read the press information that they sent me, I was really intrigued. TerraCycle collects garbage and comes up with some interesting ways to recycle it. Now I am all about the entire upcycle craze. I repurpose as many things as I can in our lives. I reuse old sweaters to make diaper covers, I repurpose my old clothes to fashion new things for Coraline, I diligently save every glass jar that comes into this house; everything has some second use around here. So, TerraCycle seemed super cool to me. I browsed the entire TerraCycle website checking out what they do, how they do it and decided they totally fit into what I wanted to do for BlogMania. I was thrilled when they agreed to be a BlogMania sponsor for The Girl Is A Mom.

Even more thrilling was something that I had no idea about a few weeks ago, they have a new tv show on the National Geographic Channel called "Garbage Moguls". Basically a cute reality show where the National Geographic team films the offices of TerraCycle as they develop new products and build their retail environments. I caught a marathon of Garbage Moguls last night, I had a great time watching the TerraCycle team.Started by Tom Szaky in 200, then a 19 year old freshman student at Princeton University. Starting as an organic fertilizer company using worm droppings packaged in old soda bottles, TerraCycle has grown into one of the most unique companies out there.

These days TerraCycle has trash collection programs all over the country that provide the materials they use to make cool new products.  Teams across the country collect everything from juice pouches to dog food bags, receiving .2cents per item from TerraCycle. This is a great program to implement at your local school, it's easy to sign up and get the kids involved in reducing the amount of waste that enters our landfills.  After trash is collected the TerraCycle design team thinks up some clever ways to reuse the waste.

For the BlogMania sponsorship I asked TerraCycle if they would contribute the YakPak Billboard Messenger Bag for the "Urban Mom" prize package; they generously obliged. I think this bag is the perfect urban mom bag, big enough to store everything you need in your purse plus the contents of a diaper bag. I'm always looking for clever new bags, this one is just that. Made from repurposed billboard vinyl, each bag is graphically different. Definitely a company worth supporting, TerraCycle is keeping our trash out of our earth.

Check out the TerraCycle Web Site.

I think Terracycle makes bags out of repurposed Sprout organic baby food pouches. I'd LOVE to have one of those! I'm planning to send some pouches in to them, and I fully intend to promote them on my blog when I do. I think what they're doing is fantastic! (Plus, the bag would be a sweet reminder of my son's love of roasted cinnamon apple oatmeal!)

Wendy,

They totally do take Sprout! Too bad Coraline stopped eating it before I knew that, but it certainly would be such a great momento from childhood :)
